Universal Credit claimant review

In July 2025 the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) started a review initiative that requires Universal Credit claimants to confirm or update their details on their online account.

This page provides important information about this and some frequently asked questions should you be asked to take part in a review.

This does not apply if you have a telephone claim.

Your claim might be reviewed to make sure you're getting the right payment and support. This could happen at any time while you're claiming Universal Credit.

If your details are not up-to-date, you might be getting the wrong amount of Universal Credit, so it's really important that you report any changes in your circumstances when they happen. Find out more about this by clicking here.

What happens at a review

If your claim is going to be reviewed, a DWP claim review agent will contact you in your online journal. They'll ask you to:

  • send some documents
  • have a telephone appointment

It's really important that you do this as, during the review, your Universal Credit payments will be stopped if one or more of the following applies:

  • you do not provide the documents
  • you do not take part in the the telephone appointment
  • you're not eligible for Universal Credit

You should also contact the claim review agent if you need help with your Universal Credit claim review, support to provide any of the documents asked for or with getting your details up-to-date.

Documents you'll need to send

When the claim review agent contacts you in your online journal they'll ask to see your ID and bank statements. Looking at your bank transactions will help your claim review agent understand if your details are up-to-date.

You might also be asked to share documents about your circumstances and the amount of Universal Credit you're getting. For example, you could be asked to provide documents about your:

  • housing costs
  • earnings or other income
  • self-employment
  • savings
  • childcare costs
  • children
  • student finance
  • caring responsibilities

Any documents requested must be provided without any changes or edits.

If you have questions about how to provide the right documents in the right format, ask the claim review agent for help in your online journal.

Your telephone appointment

You'll be invited to a phone appointment to discuss your claim. Contact your claim review agent through your online journal if you have any questions about this.

What happens if you're not getting the right amount of Universal Credit?

The review will find out if you're getting the correct amount, too much or too little in your Universal Credit payment.

If your Universal Credit payment needs to change you'll get a message in your online journal. Your future payments will be changed that means you may get:

  • an extra payment to make up what you've missed out on
  • money taken off your payments

If you disagree with a decision made during your review you have the right to challenge the decision. Information about this can be found by clicking here.
