Residents warned about smoke without fire at Radford high rise

Radford residents have been advised that if they see smoke coming out of the windows of the 17-storey Ash View high-rise block that forms part of The Woodlands in Radford on Thursday (20 November) they shouldn’t be alarmed. Nottingham City Council (NCC) and Nottingham Fire and Rescue Service (NFRS) are joining forces to deliver fire safety training to existing and new firefighters.

The training will involve using a smoke machine to simulate fire conditions and support realistic scenario-based training. On the day, there’ll be five fire engines in attendance (two on site and three on nearby streets), as well as an NFRS Fire Control Unit. (If NFRS get a call out to attend a live fire incident on the day, the training will be rescheduled).

All Woodlands residents have been notified in advance.

NFRS District Manager Ben Clements said, “This exercise presents a valuable opportunity for fire service personnel to gain practical experience in a live environment, enhancing preparedness should an incident ever occur in one of our city’s high-rise blocks.”

Cllr Jay Hayes, Nottingham City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Housing, said, “We continue to work with our blue light partners on high-rise fire safety training such as this as it enables everyone to better respond in the unlikely event of a serious incident, and  contributes to the safety of everyone in Nottingham.

“I’d like to thank the residents of Ash View and The Woodlands for their patience and consideration while the Fire Service delivers the training.”
