Reducing your bills

Although we’re all seeing our energy bills rise, there are still simple things that you can do, which will help to lower the impact.

Your heating bills

  1. Lower your thermostat – lowering by just one degree could save you up to £60 a year.
  2. Turn your heating off when you don't need it.
  3. Use the thermostats on your radiators to control the heat in each room rather than having them on full all the time.
  4. Don’t block the heat from your radiator with bulky furniture, pull it away from the radiator so the heat can circulate.
  5. Don't cover your radiators with wet washing to dry. Not only might it cause condensation, it will also block the heat from circulating.
  6. Close your curtains at night to help keep the warmth in.

Your electricity bills

  1. If you have an immersion heater, don't leave it on for long periods - 30 mins max at one time should be enough.
  2. Switch off lights and appliances you’re not using – and don’t leave things like TVs on standby.
  3. Use your washing machine on a 30-degree cycle and only use it when you have a full load.
  4. Spend less time in the shower – or don’t fill your bath so full.
  5. If you’re boiling a kettle, just boil the amount of water you need
  6. Unplug your chargers – when your device is fully charged, unplug it.
  7. Use energy saving lightbulbs where possible.
  8. Use your microwave more – it’s quicker than your oven or stove so uses less energy.
  9. Consider a slow-cooker – they’re one of the most energy efficient kitchen appliances.
